Standing on the Side of Love campaign report
Adam Gerhardstein, campaign manager of the UUA’s Standing on the Side of Love compaign, reported on the campaign’s first year. The initiative has sponsored 200 events throughout the United States, generating 133 news stories. Its email updates go to 26,000 people, and 16,000 people follow the campaign on Facebook; its videos have been viewed 30,000 times on YouTube.
“In the upcoming year,” Gerhardstein said, “standing on the side of love is going to be more important than ever before. Thirteen states are considering similar legislation to Arizona’s SB 1070 and the November elections are going to be ugly. Our voices of compassion and civility must be heard.”
He told delegates about Standing on the Side of Love’s “activist flash drives,” which include materials to help congregations sponsor their own local events. The flash drives are available for $20 in the exhibit hall.
Gerhardstein then introduced his successor as campaign manager, Dan Furmansky, the former director of Equality, Maryland, who led the Assembly in a thirty-second chant of “Love, love, love!”
