“We have a very clear vision of Unitarian Universalism,” said UUA Moderator Gini Courter, “and it comes up from the people.” Courter was delivering her eighth report as the moderator of the UUA, during the final plenary session of the 2011 General Assembly on Sunday afternoon.
Courter outlined the three main polities, or ways religious groups can organize themselves, and said that in the form of polity used by Unitarian Universalists, authority comes ultimately from all the people in the religious group. “In our polity, congregational polity,” she said, “there is no higher authority, there’s only deeper down.”

General Assembly delegates voted today to reduce the size of the Unitarian Universalist Association Board of Trustees from 26 members to 14. The bylaw amendment also ends the election of trustees by district. All trustees will be elected to “at large” positions. Terms will be reduced from four-year to three-year terms.

In the 21st century, what’s a congregation? A gathering of people in a brick and mortar building? What about communities that gather using online communication tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype? And what about the virtual world of Second Life? This afternoon I attended a UUA Board-hosted conversation on redefining congregations in our Association’s by-laws. In [...]
The Unitarian Universalist Association Board of Trustees held a workshop Friday afternoon inviting people to share their concerns and ideas for the 2012 Justice General Assembly in Phoenix, Ariz.
About 80 people gathered at the “UUA Board Conversation Space: Planning for Phoenix 2012” session. A steady stream of people stood at the microphone to offer words of caution, inspiration, and hope.
“As we begin into our second year of visioning and action, what does the board need to know with respect to accessibility, safety, and accountability at GA 2012?” asked Nick Allen, youth trustee-at-large.
The board members did not offer answers to the many questions that were posed. However, they assured people that they were listening carefully. The Rev. Jake Morrill, trustee from the Southeast District, said the board would “digest and consider” all the information and would engage in dialogue and broadcast answers.

A vocal group of delegates to the Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly met in a Mini-Assembly Thursday afternoon to discuss a proposed bylaw amendment that would shrink the size of the UUA board to 14 people from the current 26 (PDF; pages 22-28 in the Business Agenda).
Delegates spoke both for and against the amendment, which would also end the election of trustees by district. People speaking in favor of the amendment got several rounds of hearty applause.
Several amendments were offered to the proposal, but just one passed. The amendment, offered by delegate Phil Reed of Cleveland, Ohio, was added to section 9.4 (see page 25), creating a new paragraph in the section of the bylaw regarding nomination by the Nominating Committee.
